We have the echoes google group and I think it is working fairly well and I’d like to keep it if possible as google groups aren’t blocked at work and echoesofchaos.com is. Allows me to still chat with the group while at work which is great for me, personally. It also doesn’t require anyone to go to a web site to keep up, the posting comes to you. That is good for people who simply don’t want to take the time to go read a guild web site which has been a problem for some members in the past.
The thing that’s really lacking with the google group is being able to brag about ourselves. The ability to show off pictures/screenshots of cool things we’ve done (or in Kenny’s case, show some embarrassing videos). Things like the picture of us in Hellfire wearing matching outfits, when we hit 70, guild parties at Sharon’s house etc. Things that should be celebrated and we might want to look in on again. I really wanted to create a place that we could put up pictures and stories of things we’ve done. That’s why the Echoes of Chaos site is now dressed up like a blog.
Anyone in the guild who wants to contribute to the new set up or is just curious and wants to play around is totally welcome to. You’ll need to create an account and I’ll give you rights to post your own stories and pictures. Don’t be shy! I will probably end up contributing the most but it’s more fun if stories are told from other points of view, too. And I love screenshots! Post about anything you want? Got a new purple? Found a new cool pet? Whatever you want to share, share it here with photos!
FLICKR GROUP
I also wanted to mention something else I’m trying (it’s new things day!). I have created an Echoes of Chaos Flickr Group. I upload a plugin for the blog that will allow me to display items from a Flickr account or group and I installed it just to see how it works. It doesn’t look like it updates in real time, so if you add a photo to the group pool, I have to select the photo for addition to the listing on the page, which is kind of a bummer. I was really hoping for a dynamic listing of photos. Still, it’s a pretty nice display of photos and if you already use flickr an easy way to contribute.
If you have a flickr account, send me your ID and I will invite you to the flickr group so you can share your Echoes related photos to the group. I’m working on setting up pages to display our images (see the Echoes in RL link at the top of the page) from the group.
I’m not completely sold on this being the best way to display our pictures, but it seems to work ok for now. I was going to install Gallery but it doesn’t work like at all on my vista machine so it would make it a little hard for me to maintain.
NO FORUMS
Only thing we tended to use from the old site was the forums. I was going to skip adding a forums since we have the google group to chat amongst ourselves. Most of the time, the old forums sat idle apart form the great GA boy “Funny Ha Ha” post. If you would like this added, I definately can do this, but I plan to hold out for now.
ANYTHING ELSE?
I know I tend to get excited about this stupid junk and most of the time I’m disappointed when it ends up getting ignored. With that in mind, I’m restraining myself and not going to go nutso crazy adding a million different modules that do bupkus in the long run and see how this goes first. If you have something you’d like to see, I am more than willing to find and add it for you. But for now, I’m just going to sit back and see if archiving our adventures in Azeroth seems to be worthwhile.
